Uppsala company Novus Scientific AB (Headquartered in Singapore) led by CEO Thomas Engström, has been making headlines overseas again. This time, not by gaining regulatory approval for it’s ’World’s 1st’ TIGR® Matrix Surgical Mesh (a long-term resorbable, 100% synthetic mesh for hernia repair), but for 3rd place in the prestigious OCBC Cycle Singapore competition, 50km Super Challenge course.

CK (Cykel Klubb) Team Novus Scientific fielded several riders in the event held on Sunday March 7th, and one of them, 17 year old Clara Säll from Uppsala, won a podium place and a yellow jersey with a time of 1:17:35.7 over the full 50kms. First and second place went to last years race winner, Christina Liew-Gin and Singapore’s National Champion, Dinah Chan respectively.

When asked how he came to be owning an internationally competing cycling team, Engström responded: “We’re in the business of improving clinical outcomes and helping hernia patients respond to treatment in the most logical way possible. Hernias affect the young as well as the old, the fit and the infirm. Sport inflicted hernias are one of several areas that our product ‘TIGR® Matrix Surgical Mesh’ is designed to treat, and since many of us within the company subscribe to a healthy lifestyle and enjoy competitive cycling…this seemed like a great way of getting our message across, keeping fit and helping talented young athletes to achieve their goals too.”

CK Team Novus Scientific was formed in December 2009 and achieved Swedish club status shortly thereafter. For several years prior to the formation of the team, Engström and several of his team members rode together as an amateur club under his previous venture, Radi Medical Systems AB. ‘Radi’ was sold to the American company St Jude Medical in December 2008 and the Uppsala office of Novus Scientific AB is now a mere 300m away, in Uppsala Science Park.

Novus Scientific (www.novusscientific.com) is an innovator in the development and commercialization of resorbable synthetic medical devices. Global HQ is in Singapore while European HQ and the core R&D function are in Uppsala, Sweden. The company’s roots are Swedish as all the founders of Novus Scientific are previous owners / senior managers / members of the soft tissue-engineering project within Uppsala based, Radi Medical Systems AB (now owned by St. Jude Medical Inc). Novus also has offices in the US and UK.
