The Study

This is a presentation of the results from a 3 year implantation study of TIGR® Matrix Surgical Mesh in the abdominal wall of sheep. The study was published by Hernia and is available here: http://www.springerlink.com/content/c033k26015677312/
The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of TIGR® Matrix compared to a non-resorbable (non-absorbable) polypropylene mesh. The study was conducted in accordance with the requirements of FDA (21 CFR, Part 58) and OECD Good Laboratory Practice at an independent research facility.

4 MONTHS - NEOVASCULARIZATION

4 MONTHS - NEOVASCULARIZATION

The formation of new blood vessels can clearly be seen within the connective tissue in the vicinity of the implanted mesh fibers.

4 MONTHS - TISSUE INGROWTH

4 MONTHS - TISSUE INGROWTH

Connective tissue infiltrating the synthetic filaments of TIGR® Matrix.

4 MONTHS - INTEGRATION

4 MONTHS - INTEGRATION

Optimal tissue integration of TIGR® Matrix with a well organized, regenerated fibroconnective tissue.

6 MONTHS - MACROPOROSITY

6 MONTHS - MACROPOROSITY

TIGR® Matrix fibers under plane polarized light following 6 months implantation. TIGR® Matrix well integrated into the abdominal wall with abundant fibroconnective tissue.

9 MONTHS - DECLINING INFLAMMATION

9 MONTHS - DECLINING INFLAMMATION

The inflammatory response of TIGR® Matrix is limited to the exact location of the fibers. No signs of granuloma. New blood vessels are also evident adjacent to TIGR® Matrix filament, along with structured connective tissue.

15 MONTHS - ABUNDANT COLLAGEN

15 MONTHS - ABUNDANT COLLAGEN

Ordered connective tissue ingrowth (C) between two TIGR® Matrix multifilament bundles. Collagen is abundant and the inflammatory response is low.

24 MONTHS - DEGRADATION

24 MONTHS - DEGRADATION

TIGR® Matrix filaments surrounded by giant cells which have engulfed fibers, indicating an ongoing process of degradation.
Collagen fibers are infiltrating the mesh.

24 MONTHS - STRUCTURED COLLAGEN

24 MONTHS - STRUCTURED COLLAGEN

Well structured and nicely layered collagen is present between the fibers of TIGR® Matrix.

36 MONTHS - COLLAGEN FORMATION

36 MONTHS - COLLAGEN FORMATION

TIGR® Matrix is resorbed and replaced by abundant collagen. Few inflammatory cells remaining and no foreign body reaction can be seen. Fibroblasts are distributed within well organized connective tissue.
